Two wins today following on from two wins on Monday has propelled MAGS Football Girls First XI into the quarter-finals against a strong Takapuna Grammar School side.
Earlier today, MAGS beat Massey High School 3-0 but only after some bad misses on goal.
Eventually, they found the back of the net, just before half-time, with a great finish from Maisy Dewell from outside the box. The second half saw an early goal scored by Jayna Bennett, who had a great game and was rewarded for her hard work. MAGS controlled possession for the remainder of the game but finishing let them down until late in the game when Jayna scored her second after a great assist from Genevieve Ryan.
The win secured MAGS first place in their pool and sent them through to the Top 16 play-offs, where they met Trident High School.
An experienced team, Trident played a more physical game. This did not really suit MAGS’ young squad, however Grace Jale stepped up and gave her team the lead with a goal from a free kick in the eighth minute. This helped the team to settle and play freely. After half-time, MAGS came into the game with a different approach and dominated. The second goal was a great pass from Maisy Dewell to Jayna Bennett, who took her time and rounded the goalkeeper and scored, 2-0. The third goal was a copy of the second goal, this time though it was Grace Jale, who found herself one-on-one with the goalkeeper, to make it a 3-0 lead. The final goal was scored after a great combination, when Emma Atherton found Grace Jale in an open position to score, but she passed to Maisy Dewell, who shot the ball into the top corner for a final 4-0 scoreline.
