Choir fine tuned by world-renowned teacher

The Headmaster’s Choir, Ad Augusta, received a sought-after tutorial by world renowned choral teacher Mr Peter Watts on Friday, 12 May.

Mr Watts travels the globe as an examiner for Trinity College, London, and teaches Musicology at the University of Auckland. He was Musical Director of Auckland Choral for 20 years, and awarded the MNZM for his services to choral music.

Mr Watts has judged many choral competitions, including the Big Sing at which Ad Augusta will compete against other Auckland school choirs in June.

He spent an afternoon with our top singers and choir master, Mr Christian Malietoa-Brown, refining the students’ performance of Dirait-On by Morten Lauridsen, and giving them lessons on breathing techniques to enhance their singing.

“You have a lovely sound,” said Mr Watts. “You just need to be a bit more full and rich to fill the space in the Town Hall where you will be competing.”

Teacher in charge of the choir Ms Sarah Hayes said it was an honour to have Mr Watts tutor the students. “He is a leader in his field and the choir would have gained a lot from his advice.”
