Two students from Mount Albert Grammar School who came top in New Zealand in 2016 Scholarship subjects were presented with their Top Scholar Awards at a ceremony at Parliament on Wednesday, 3 May.
Our 2016 Girl Dux Theresa Boyd came first in Biology, and Wanli Cheng came first in Chinese. Theresa is currently in Denmark so her award was accepted by Acting Headmaster Mr Paul McKinley, and presented to her mother, Ms Lyn Stanton, at school the following day.
Wanli travelled from Otago University, where he his studying Health Science, to accept his award.
The guest speaker at the event was Ms Nikki Kaye, in her first official duty as the new Minister of Education.
Mr McKinley said it was a reflection on MAGS’ high academic standing that two of the 35 top subject scholars came from the school. “All the students present were very well rounded – many were not only outstanding academics, they had also got involved in service and other activities through their schools. This was true of Theresa and Wanli also.”
Theresa and Wanli’s Scholarships were among a record number attained at Outstanding level by Mount Albert Grammar students last year, placing the school among the top six in New Zealand.
