Life at Centennial House

Boarding for Girls

There are few state-funded schools that boast a boarding establishment. Centennial House opened this year on May 1st 2022.
Centennial House caters for girls from New Zealand and around the world, all of whom are assisted to grow and fulfil their potential in a safe, structured and caring environment.
Girls may board for five or seven days per week, at the same term rate, with fees payable a term in advance.
These fees cover three meals a day as well as afternoon tea and supper, laundry, accommodation and recreation.
Girls are supervised at all times and can only obtain leave passes by prior arrangement with the Centennial House staff. Overnight leave is approved only by the House Manager.
Centennial House girls are provided with extra educational opportunities. Supervised homework and study programmes take place between 7.15pm and 8.50pm Sunday to Thursday.
At Centennial House, Year 9, 10 and 11 girls share rooms with single beds, Year 12 and 13 girls each have their own room with study facilities.
We have two Houses at present within Centennial House that have a House Prefect and a Deputy House Prefect in each. Faamausili and Aimer Seton House are named after the first Head Girl and the first Girl Dux respectively of MAGS.

On-site House Manager

Centennial House is under the control of the House Manager, and two of the School’s teaching staff who also live on site.

The Centennial House Philosophy consists of four basic tenets:

  • Each girl will have a secure, safe and clean environment to live in.
  • Each girl will be given the opportunity to fulfil her academic, sporting, cultural and leadership potential
  • Each girl is expected to participate as fully as possible in the wider life of the School.
  • Each girl is taught to be self-disciplined and well organised, and to maintain a consistently high standard of behaviour in the school and at Centennial House.

Feedback from girls new to Centennial House:

“My first year at the girls Centennial House was an experience that was a roller coaster of different emotions. When you’re in the boarding house it’s like living at a home away from home.”

“My first year at Centennial House was a good experience. I really enjoyed all the themed dinners we had, and it was an easy adjustment going from living with your family to a group of girls you’re never met before. Everyone’s really friendly and supportive. You get to meet new people and make lots of friends, and it’s a home away from home.”

“My first year at the girls Centennial House was a rocky experience at the start but growing to the environment I enjoyed to get to know the people around me and developing new bonds and the taste of a different living situation away from home the way. I would describe the house as a home away from home and I have enjoyed my moments here and I’m excited to make more and more memories.”

“My first year at Centennial House went great because I made some cool friends, as well as gaining new experiences from themed dinners and house activities. I loved having different desserts every night with my personal fav being the apple crumble. The staff are lovely and helped me feel at home and cared for. However, my favourite part of house would have to be the humongous couch and huge tv, closely followed by the table tennis table and basketball hoop. I loved my home away from home, St Luke’s who I got to visit once a week, the various selections at breakfast such as waffles, pancakes and bagels and getting woken up by my personal alarm clocks. All in all I am very grateful for being able to have attended Centennial House.”

“I enjoy the feeling of being around a supportive group of girls. The food is so amazing and we get so much time to go out and have fun with friends and family. We’re like a big family having a big sleep over.”

“I enjoyed meeting new people that turned into friends and I enjoyed the different experience. I thought it was a fun experience to feel what it felt like being away from home.”
