Welcome to Mount Albert Grammar School

Mount Albert Grammar School has successfully served its community since 1922. The School has consistently achieved excellence in academic, sporting and cultural areas. The School offers a high quality of educational opportunity amidst the strong traditions of one of the oldest and best schools in Auckland.

In 2000, the School enrolled girls for the first time. Since then, the girls’ roll has grown to be almost the equivalent of the boys’ roll, with the school now at about 3400 students. Our school has all the advantages of a large school, yet offers all of the warmth, encouragement and family-like qualities of a small school. The Junior School (Years 9 and 10) is a self-contained “school within a school”, providing a unique blend of single-sex education and co-education for the initial two years.

Mount Albert Grammar School has a staff of well-qualified and dedicated professionals who work in excellent facilities.

The Education Review Office has consistently made a point of commending the school for its outstanding academic achievements: “Student achievement in NCEA is higher than national averages and is considerably higher than averages for other similar schools.” Click here to read the latest ERO Report

In Scholarship, New Zealand’s top secondary school academic award, our school is among the top six in the country.

We offer a diverse range of sporting opportunities for students. While we believe that participation is an important aspect of sport, our teams and individual students regularly win Auckland and National championships.

The Arts at the school continue to grow and thrive under the outstanding leadership of staff. Our Dance, Drama and Music students are regularly judged among the top in New Zealand.

We are proud of our multicultural student body, supported by our Māori whānau unit, Te Puna o Wairaka, and our Pasifika Initiatives unit.

We help students celebrate their diversity by running Māori, Chinese, Cook Island, Indian, Japanese, Korean, Niuean, Samoan and Tongan Cultural Groups.

Successful sports academies operate in Aquatics, Basketball, Cricket, Football, Netball, Rowing and Rugby.

School House, the school boarding facility, accommodates 105 boys, and in 2022 we opened Centennial House, a hostel that can take up to 25 girls.

The ASB MAGS Farm continues to provide a remarkable resource for the study of agricultural and horticultural science in a central city school. An exciting redevelopment of the farm is under way that will help to promote careers in the primary sector to students from all over Auckland.

We set high standards at Mount Albert Grammar School and we have high expectations of our students.

“The MAGS Way” is a set of values which underpins our school culture and provides guiding principles for our students.
Parents are very welcome at our school. Please do not hesitate to call on any matter concerning your child’s education.

I am proud to be the seventh headmaster of this outstanding school. It is a happy and caring place where students can reach their potential.
